The Atlin Courthouse

Built in 1900, this Atlin landmark housed the Courtroom, Gold Commissioner and Mining Recorder offices. Now fully restored, it houses our local library and the Atlin Courthouse Gallery -an artist co-operative.

The Courthouse was originally built on Third Street at Pearl Avenue.

Above and Below are photos of the Courthouse where it was originally built on Third Street.

In the 1950’s or 1960’s it was moved to Second Street near Pearl Avenue.

In the summer of 2023, it was moved again.

The Courthouse has been sitting on Second Street for decades. It’s time for some major maintenance.

Apparently Atlin is sitting in a clay bowl. Underground springs cannot always drain away, so the ground in some places gets soaked. Our dear Courthouse needed a new foundation and a drier place to be, so the Atlin Historical Society took on the task of solving this problem.

In 2023, after 6 years of planning, enquiries, and fund raising, the move came to fruition. A basement was built above ground on the back of the lot. The Courthouse was moved back onto it. (Hurrah!)

To get some sense of how far and how fast the building was moved, watch the flagpole.

The Atlin Courthouse Gallery has some displays in the Judges’ Quarters.

This artwork is by renowned Whitehorse artist, Colin Alexander.
